Finny and Benny in SC

Since this is my last day in SC, we decided to head out to Furman University, one of my favorite spots in the area.

Benny has told Finnegan all about our new town in Oregon. Finny thought it was only right to take Benny out for an afternoon in the South. After a walk by the fountains and a stop to smell the magnolias, we made it to the lake. 20140607-200210-72130630.jpg

Benny was very excited until the ducks began to land nearby. Beavers and ducks just don’t mix. We tried to only lob our stale English muffins to the turtles and not the ducks. Benny seemed to enjoy that.

Our trip was but short because of a problem with my phone. We made a quick trip to the AT&T store and seem to be in business again.

The big adventure starts bright and early tomorrow. Catch you down the road…

Gallabrae – Greenville Scottish Games

gallabrae caberMcB and I attended Gallabrae – Greenville Scottish Games on Memorial Day weekend. The festivities were held at Furman. In addition to pipers, the event featured border collie competitions, Highland dancing, heavy athletics like caber and sheath tossing, a Celtic music tent, and a British car show.

We were both pretty impressed with Gallabrae. There were a number of things going on simultaneously and you could easily find something to suit your fancy.

pipers gallabraeIf you’ve never been to the games before, I would definitely recommend going next year.

At $15 per adult, it’s not the cheapest event; but, the wide variety of activities makes it a good value.

In the spirit of sharing, I would offer these lessons to make your day a bit more enjoyable.

  • Arrive early. The traffic snarls quite a bit and you don’t want to miss anything while waiting in a long line.
  • Consider taking a bag chair or blanket. Seating is very limited and while there is a lot of grass to sit on, some of it is oddly rough and scratchy.
  • Save money by printing out a schedule from the website or going to the festival tent to see the full program instead of buying one.
  • If you don’t mind buying a program, get it early. They were sold out around noon on Saturday.
  • Wear a hat and sunscreen. There is very little shade.
  • Take cash for the vendors, especially those selling water and cold beverages.parachutes at gallabrae
    • Go to the opening ceremony. This year we saw a team parachuting down with American and Scottish flags, pipers, and the parade of clans.
  • Visit the British car show on your way out. The cars are in a nice shady area that’s not unbearable in the heat of the day.

Here are a few more images from the day. After looking at these and recounting the day, I’m really looking forward to the 2013 event.

Furman Photo Walk

These photos are from our visit to Furman University back on December 17, 2011. Mr. McB and I had planned to go to the movies but we thought better of when we realized what a mild, sunny Saturday we’d been blessed with.

Furman is known for having a gorgeous campus, see number 12 on this list. In addition to the beautiful buildings, the campus also features many beautiful natural areas. They even produced a field guide to the trees and animals that you’ll find at Furman. Here are a few images from our little photo walk.

Original building, new locationThis is the original building that housed Furman’s two classrooms. It was moved from its original location and can now be found near the lake.

Furman’s Florentine belltower and bare trees
This photo was not touched up in anyway. The sky was just a stunning shade of blue.

These trees flank the pathway to the bell tower. They are so smooth, I could have rubbed them all day. These are the kinds of trees that are heaven to a tactile person like me.

The clouds showed up in this photo of the pond in the Japanese gardens.

The last remnants of fall were trapped in the pond.

Even dead grass can make an interesting contrast.

Cattails that look like big fat corn dogs – albeit moldy, furry corndogs.
